Wicked sinners of sojers kem to these part

Samuel Lover (1797 – 1868)

Samuel Lover was born in Dublin of an English Protestant family. He studied painting at an early age, and though he continued to practise that art, he soon discovered his talent for writing. Many of his most delightful sketches of Irish life appeared in various Dublin periodicals in the early thirties. In 1832 he published his Legends and Stories of Ireland, in which The White Trout is found. The best known of his novels is Handy Andy.

The White Trout is reprinted from Yeats’ Irish Fairy and Folk Tales; New York, no date.

The White Trout

There was wanst upon a time, long ago, a beautiful lady that lived in a castle upon the lake beyant, and they say she was promised to a king’s son, and they wor to be married, when all of a sudden he was murthered, the crathur (Lord help us), and threwn into the lake above, and so, of course, he couldn’t keep his promise to the fairy lady and more’s the pity.

Well; the story goes that she went out iv her mind, bekase av loosin’ the king’s son for she was tendher-hearted, God help her, like the rest iv us! and pined away after him, until at last, no one about seen her, good or bad; and the story wint that the fairies took her away.

Well, sir, in coorse o’ time, the White Throut, God bless it, was seen in the sthrame beyant, and sure_the people didn’t know what to think av the crathur, seein’ as how a white throut was never heard av afor, nor since; and years upon years the throut was there, just where you seen it this blessed minit, longer nor I can tell aye throth, and beyant the memory o’- th’ ouldest in the village.

At last the people began to think it must be a fairy; for what else could it be? and no hurt nor harm was iver put an the white throut, until some wicked sinners of sojers kem to these parts, and laughed at all the people, and gibed and jeered them for thinkin’ o’ the likes; and one o’ them in partic’lar (bad luck to him; God forgi’ me for saying it!) swore he’d catch the throut and ate it for his dinner the blackguard !

Well, what would you think o’ the villainy of the sojer? Sure enough he cotch the throut, and away wid him home, and puts an the fryin’- pan, and into it he pitches the purty little thing. The throut squeeled all as one as a Christian crathur, and, my dear, you’d think the sojer id split his sides laughin’ for he was a harden’d villain; and when he thought one side was done, he turns it over to fry the other; and, what would you think, but the divil a taste of a burn was an it at all at all; and sure the sojer thought it was a quare throut that could not be briled. “But,” says he, “I’ll give it another turn by and by,” little thinkin’ what was in store for him, the haythen.

Promoting Themselves And Sharing Their Mus

The world around us is constantly changing. Trends are changing, tastes are changing and people are changing. The same goes for music. People are seeking inspiration and a big part of them find it in music. Even if you have your genre already set, you may still be looking for something new, sometimes. This is just how we, people, work.

Nowadays, we have technology. Thanks to it, discovering new music is much easier than it was decades ago, when going to a party, a concert or buying the recent album on vinyl of your favorite band were more or less the most common and accessible ways to listen to something fresh. From the best known specialized websites in this domain, like YouTube or Vimeo to the least known blogs or forums, music is within a click away from you.

Artists started embracing these ways of promoting themselves and sharing their music as the popularity of these websites increased. From newcomers to world-known performers, no one is saying no to the internet.

Such online audio distribution platforms like Soundcloud, Spotify or 8tracks surged over the last years and made it quick and simple for people to explore and enjoy a rich palette of sounds and styles. You have the possibility to create playlists, to subscribe to the channels or follow the profiles of your favorite artists and based on your taste in music you always get suggestions which are similar to your picks. This way you never get bored and you help the maybe lesser known artists to get discovered and gain a positive reputation. It’s a win-win situation.

Beside the internet, a great way to discover new music is the traditional one: by going to concerts, festivals or parties. One goes usually to a festival, for instance, to listen to their favorite bands live, but there are always other artists or DJs who come in between and sing or mix their songs. Involuntarily, you’ll listen to them maybe while engaging in other activities and end up loving them, thinking: „How come that I never heard about you? You’re awesome!”

Another conventional method is the radio. Although it seems old and outdated the truth is that radio is actually a great idea to come upon songs you might actually like. While waiting in traffic or in your dentist’s waiting room or even at home in the kitchen, the radio is a good way to learn about other artists and their tracks.

Believe it or not, it has actually happened to me before. Give it a try sometime. Let your car CD’s rest a bit or take your earphones off while doing something else and listen to the radio. It’s refreshing. Keep your phone close though and use an app to recognize these new songs. Try Shazam, SoundHound or SoundTracking to identify your music and safely store it and listen it over and over again.

So even if you’re the technology type, choosing the internet as an inspiration or if you’re the more traditional one, seeking it at concerts, festivals or even at a random party at your friend’s house, embrace the idea of discovering new things. There is always something going on out there. You just have to open your mind and, respectively, ears in order to enrich your musical collection.

A certain officer of the Free Corps

Exclusively occupied with discussions respecting the balance of power, statesmen bestowed no thought upon the interests of the Christian population ; who had shown themselves so deserving of general sympathy. It was deemed sufficient to secure an amnesty for aU who had, in any of the Turkish provinces, deserted the Sultan and gone over to the Emperor, and to allow them to return in. safety to their estates. ‘ Thus Servia, with all its fortresses, was given back to the Sultan.

No one, however, will suppose that, by these means, affairs were placed upon their former footing.

The Turkish commissioners who took possession of the Country expressed their astonishment, mingled with apprehension of what might be the results, when they beheld a Servian troop, fully armed, march out from a fortress which was to be delivered up to them, and perform with precision all the military evolutions of the Imperial Army. “ Neighbours ! ” cried one of them, “ what have you made of our liaja ? ”

It has been affirmed that, to the last, the Servians indulged in the expectation of rising up in arms under a certain officer of the Free Corps, whom they wished to elevate to the dignity of a Prince over them ; and that a young Servian lady, courted by the officer referred to, had in a jest been saluted as their Princess ! The truth of this statement has not been ascertained; but, at all events, it is evident that the spirit of national independence when once roused could not easily be suppressed. They who had borne victorious arms against the Turks, cherished a feeling of their own dignity by such recollections.

Since Russia, on her side, had, in the peace of Jassy, imparted fresh force to the stipulations which had previously been agreed upon in favour of the Christian inhabitants of Moldavia and Wal- lachia, and in the islands of the Archipelago, it will be seen how greatly the elements of resistance and independence amongst the Christian nations in European Turkey, had increased in consequence of this war.

But it had also another effect, of a very different, and one might almost say, of an opposite character.

For some time the Turkish government had been fully sensible of the superiority of its neighbours, and of its own inability in its actual state to resist them. It almost despaired of being able to remedy the evil. “ The Empire is overthrown !” exclaimed the Sultan, Mustapha III.: “do not imagine that it can be restored by us.” Prepared for the worst, a Vizier of Abdulhamid observed, “ In Asia, too, there are shady valleys, where kiosks may be built.”

The prisoner himself sat by the table

“If I have the courage to fulfil my intention,” thought the old man, “the Suspicion will fall on the watchman first of all.”

In the darkness he groped for the steps and the door and entered the hall of the garden-wing, then poked his way into a narrow passage and struck a match. Not a soul was there. Some one’s bed, with no bedclothes on it, stood there, and an iron stove loomed dark in the comer. The seals on the door that led into the prisoner’s room were unbroken.

When the match went out, the old man, trembling from agitation, peeped into the little window.

‘In the prisoner’s room a candle was burning dimly. The prisoner himself sat by the table. Only his back, the hair on his head and his hands were visible. Open books were strewn about on the table, the two chairs, and on the carpet near the table.

Five minutes passed and the prisoner never once stirred. Fifteen years’ confinement had taught him to sit motionless. The banker tapped on the window with his finger, but the prisoner made no movement in reply. Then the banker cautiously tore the seals from the door and put the key into the lock. The rusty lock gave a hoarse groan and the door creaked. The banker expected instantly to hear a cry of surprise and the sound of steps. Three minutes passed and it was as quiet inside as it had been before. He made up his mind to enter.

Before the table sat a man, unlike an ordinary human being. It was a skeleton, with tight-drawn skin, with long curly hair like a woman’s, and a shaggy beard. The color of his face was yellow, of an earthy shade; the cheeks were sunken, the back long and narrow, and the hand upon which he leaned his hairy head was so lean and skinny that it was painful to look upon. His hair was already silvering with gray, and no one who glanced at the senile emaciation of the face would have believed that he was only forty years old. On the table, before his bended head, lay a sheet of paper on which something was written in a tiny hand.

“Poor devil,” thought the banker, “he’s asleep and probably seeing millions in his dreams. I have only to take and throw this half-dead thing on the bed, smother him a moment with the pillow, and the most careful examination will find no trace of unnatural death. But, first, let us read what he has written here.”

The Patarenc Sect

The Servians themselves invited the Osmanlis into their fortresses, that they might not see their strongholds given over to a cardinal of the Romish Church. The King of Bosnia, whose intention it was to marry a Servian princess, and to unite both countries under the protection of the Pope, also made a declaration of fealty; and with   the same result.

The Patarenc sect, which prevailed throughout Bosnia, and had been for centuries attached to Borne, against which a crusade had been repeatedly preached, was also in favour of Turkish rather than of Roman domination. * At the next attack of the Turks, that sect no longer offered any defence : within eight days, seventy Bosnian fortresses opened their gates to the Turks, and the king himself fell into the enemy’s power.

It is possible that such events might have been prevented, if these countries had, at an earlier period, adopted the system of the Western states: but affairs must have been very differently conducted. Hungary, which from the first belonged to the Western empire, was soon after conquered by the Turks.

But the Servians and Bosnians, who preferred submitting to the Turks, had no presentiment of what they were doing, nor of the fate that awaited them under the new rule.

On the pretext that there was no necessity for keeping faith with an infidel, the last prince of the Bosnians, whose life had been guaranteed to him, was, notwithstanding, murdered by the hand of the fanatical Sheik by whom this doctrine was promulgated.

The chief nobles of the country, whom the Turks began to annihilate as they had already annihilated the royal house, soon perceived that their only safety lay in embracing Mahometanism. The last Princess had fled to Rome, and at her death had by will made over to the Pope her right to the country. The Pontiff, touching the sword and shoe which were delivered to him, as tokens of the bequest accepted it, on the ground that her children, a son and a daughter, having embraced Islamism, had thereby become incapable of succeeding her.

Urged by the example of the Princess — by the danger of refusal on one hand, and by the prospect on the other of a share in public affairs, if they complied, the most illustrious families were by degrees induced to turn Mahometans. Thus they retained an hereditary right in their castles; and, so long as they remained united, enjoyed much influence in the province.

Sometimes a native Vizier was allowed them. By this means, however, they separated themselves from their people, who, in defiance of every inducement, remained true to their old faith; and, being excluded from holding any office in the state, and from carrying arms, they, in common with all the Christian subjects of the Turkish empire, became

Guide

Malaga is one of Andalucía’s major cities along with Granada, Cordoba, Seville, Murcia and Almeria. Coming under Phoenician. Roman and Arab rule in the past, Malaga is a historic city as well as a touristic paradise. The vast coasts of the Costa del Sol, the last bay before the Mediterranean meets the Atlantic, begin to fill with tourists starting in early spring.

Historic Alcazaba, the Picasso Museum, the Costa del Sol and the cafes at the city center are just some of places you must see in Malaga. If you like seafood, you will be more than pleased by the abundance of fresh fish you ’ll find there at extremely reasonable prices. You can also explore the Alhambra Palace and Cordoba Mosque on day tours from Malaga, which is not far from those two cities.

The future

The past 10 years have seen a radical transformation of the music industry away from a system of distribution controlled by major record companies to an absolute flood of new music,

New artists and new ways to both distribute music and reach music fans. This transformation has been driven by the Internet and new technologies including Napster, iTunes, file sharing, Bit Torrent, email, instant messaging and Twitter.

How can musicians of today and of the future prepare themselves for a career in this dynamic marketplace where many of the business rules of the past have been eliminated and new rules are being invented every day? At Berklee College of Music, the world’s largest music school, we think about these issues every day as we prepare students for successful careers in music.

The challenge facing recording artists and record labels is the idea of being able to sell recorded music in significant volumes. That business is clearly under a lot of pressure. CD sales continue to fall. Digital sales have started to emerge but they are not replacing CD sales. In addition, digital sales online are certainly starting to level off after the growth of the last few years.

Therefore, the idea that one can record music, distribute it, and make money as musicians and labels have done in the past is not necessarily going to hold true any longer. That is a huge challenge to any business that defines itself as a record label, and changes the fundamental economics of the music industry.

Quite possibly, there will not be any recording revenues available 10 years from now, or if they are available, they will be available in a very different way. Music fans will be purchasing music as part of a subscription service or a utility like a cable television subscription or from an Internet Service Provider, so that is a fundamental change in the music industry that the industry has to cope with.

We are already seeing services like Spotify, Radio and Pandora emerge to deliver music to fans either digitally for a subscription fee or through the support of advertisers. Long term, musicians will need to figure out a strategy for how they are going to make money in the music business if recorded music as an engine to drive sales is no longer the dominant revenue stream.

What we call the music industry is only about 70 or 80 years old, and the radio, then vinyl recordings and cassettes and then CDs have largely driven it. However, 70years ago, there was not really a music industry based around recordings. Instead, it was based around live events, concerts, and parties and that is where musicians made money if they made any money at all in music.

In some respects, we are going back to a model where recordings are not the primary source of revenue, but instead it is going to be more of the interaction with the audience and the experience.

If you’re comfortable with what you’re wearing

Unlike a dinner date, a night out at the movies allows for a more casual dress code. This lets you better show off your own style and personality. We know that it can be a nerve-wracking event. Putting together the right outfit can give you a boost of confidence, letting you relax and have better conversations after the credits start rolling.

How you dress matters a lot more than most people think, especially in situations like these where making a good first impression is important. In this guide, we’ve listed some handy tips that will help you put together the perfect outfit for your first date. So, without further ado, here’s how to dress for your next special night out at the big screen.

This largely depends on what you plan to do afterward. If a leisurely walk is on the books, perhaps the heels should stay at home. Avoid overly casual options such as flip-flops or old sneakers. You don’t need to look like you’re going to a wedding, but looking like you don’t put any effort into what you wear won’t give the greatest impression, either.

Boots, strappy sandals and flats are always great options. While lower heels may work with your outfit of choice, ensure that you’re confident and capable enough to wear them without tumbling down the stairs while looking for a seat. Higher heels can look great with a modern, casual outfit, while pairing them with a dress may be a bit too formal.

Look Good, Smell Great

Most people would agree that a good perfume makes a person much more attractive. Perfume not only gives your potential significant other a positive impression of you but can also lift your own mood and enhance your personality. We could all do with a confidence booster and nothing does a better job than the right perfume. If you’re looking for the best perfumes on the market at unbeatable prices, be sure to take a look at the original perfumes by Maple Prime.

Here you can find a range of both affordable and high-end fragrances, as well as a plethora of other products including skincare, haircare, makeup, nails, and bathroom essentials. Free shipping and returns come as standard for U.S. customers.

Wearing the Right Top

When it comes to tops, a simple blouse with some light detailing is sure to make a good impression. Avoid anything with overly extravagant prints or patterns and keep the cleavage to a minimum. Go for simple colors that compliment your dressy jeans, pants or skirt. Be sure to keep a blazer, cardigan or jacket handy for when it gets cold.

Accessories

Wearing a few of your favorite accessories – be it a scarf, necklace or bracelet, can add a classy finishing touch to your outfit and help showcase your personality. Avoid overly gaudy accessories and stick to simple but elegant pieces.

Conclusion

Perhaps most important of all is the comfort. If you’re comfortable with what you’re wearing, you won’t have to constantly focus on how you look and your date won’t get the wrong impression. Keep it classy, relaxed and stylish. We know you can do it.

Rulers of Britain

Geoffrey of Monmouth (1100 – 1154)

Our information about Geoffrey of Monmouth is very limited. He was probably of Welsh origin, and lived in the Welsh Marches, not far from the scenes of the

most famous exploits of Arthur and his knights. His Chronicle has been aptly

called a “romance-history.” The twelve books or chapters of which it is

composed are stories of the early (actual or imaginary) rulers of Britain.

Among the finest of these are stories of King Lear, King Arthur, and the one

here reprinted. Esyllt and Sabrina is one of the loveliest of all the early

English tales.

The present version, translated from the original Latin by Louisa J. Menzies, is

reprinted from Legendary Tales of the Ancient Britons, London, 1864.

Esyllt and Sabrina  (From the Chronicle of Geoffrey of Monmouth)

It was about three thousand years ago that there lived a fierce warrior, named

Hymyr, the Hun, whose chief delight it was to voyage about over the mighty sea,

and to make descents upon fruitful lands and take to himself by rapine and

violence the produce of the long toil of the husbandman and the artisan; nor

was he always content with stores of corn, treasure of gold, of silver, and

apparel; many fair children did he carry off from burning homesteads, young

maidens, and even wives, who sorrowed in vain for slaughtered husbands and

brothers, and bore in pale resignation the stern rule of the tyrant and his

haughty queen.

Once Hymyr fitted out a great armament, and voyaging up the river Albis, carried off from its banks the fair daughter of a German King, whom he found playing with her maidens in a flowery meadow; then he coasted along the shore of Frisia, a terror to the husbandmen, and, forasmuch as he had heard that there was much and singular wealth in the island of Albion, newly named Britain, from its King  Brutus, he turned the heads of his ships northward, and came to the part of the island that lies towards the Great Bear, and which was then called Albany. Landing here with his fierce sea-robbers, he easily defeated Albanactus, the king, who came hastily to meet him with raw levies, for he was but newly come to his throne, and was thinking of nothing less than invasion.

Then Hymyr had a joyous time of it, he reveled and feasted in the halls of

Albanactus, and so pleasant did the country, seem in his eyes, with its great

rows of purple mountains, its gleaming lakes abounding in fish, and its forests

teeming with game, that he was in no hurry to take to the sea again: so he

hunted and feasted till the summer was past its prime, eating the good fruits

of the earth, and making the land desolate of men.

Then news came to him that

Albanactus, the king, was marching up from the south with an army of tried

warriors, the warriors of Locrinus, his brother, King of Loegria, for so the

southern part of Briatin was named, and that Locrinus himself was with them.

A due resignation to Providence

Some time after, Mr. Veal’s friends got him a place in the customhouse at Dover,

which occasioned Mrs. Veal, by little and little, to fall off from her intimacy

with Mrs. Bargrave, though there was never any such thing as a quarrel; but an

indifferency came on by degrees, till at last Mrs. Bargrave had not seen her in

two years and a half, though above a twelvemonth of the time Mrs. Bargrave hath been absent from Dover, and this last half-year has been in Canterbury about two months of the time, dwelling in a house of her own.

In this house, in the eighth of September, one thousand seven hundred and five,

she was sitting alone in the forenoon, thinking over her unfortunate life, and

arguing herself into a due resignation to Providence, though her condition

seemed hard: “And,’’ said she, “I have been provided for hitherto, and doubt

not but I shall be still, and am well satisfied that my afflictions shall end

when it is most fit for me.”

Struck twelve at noon

And

then took up her sewing work, which she had no sooner done but she hears a

knocking at the door; she went to see who was there, and this proved to be Mrs.

Veal, her old friend, who was in a riding habit. At that moment of time the

clock struck twelve at noon.

“Madam,” says Mrs. Bargrave, “I am surprised to see you, you who have been so long a stranger”; but told her she was glad to see her, and offered to salute her,

which Mrs. Veal complied with, till their lips almost touched, and then Mrs.

Veal drew her hand across her own eyes, and said, “I am not very well,” and so

waived it. She told Mrs. Bargrave she was going a journey, and had a great mind

to see her first. “But,” says Mrs. Bargrave, “how can you take a journey alone?

I am amazed at it, because I know you have a fond brother.”

“Oh,” says Mrs. Veal, “I gave my brother the slip, and came away, because I had so

great a desire to see you before I took my journey.” So Mrs. Bargrave went in

with her into another room within the first, and Mrs. Veal sat her down in an

elbow-chair, in which Mrs. Bargrave was sitting when she heard Mrs. Veal knock.

“Then,” says Mrs. Veal, “my dear friend, I am come to renew our old friendship

again, and beg your pardon for my breach of it; and if you can forgive me, you

are the best of women.” “Oh,” says Mrs. Bargrave, “do not mention such a thing;

I have not had an uneasy thought about it.”

Fashion through the years

Fashion is about more than just the latest clothes to hit the catwalks. Fashion is a vital indicator of the times we live in. It acts like a mirror held up to the society that creates it. Whether it is a deliberate act or simply an organic process is debatable, but what is for sure is the fact that fashion is much more than a few designers dictating what we wear.

Look at fashion over the years. The roaring 20s with short

skirts and Art Deco styling gave way to the even more extravagant 30s. After

that, the war interrupted and fashion became a lot more austere as necessity

replaced experimentation.

This was a theme that continued into the formal and staid

50s. It was the era of the two-piece suit and conservative colors. Then in the

60s, the cultural revolution came and blew away the cobwebs of conservatism.

All of a sudden, fashion was about short skirts, bold colors and patterns.

The 70s followed the theme but introduced its own range of

fashion icons. The 60s might have had the miniskirt but the 70s had the flared

jean, an equally important and lasting contribution to the fashion world.

The 80s brought shoulder pads and power dressing. Joan

Collins became a fashion icon whilst aged in her fifties, showing that older

women could be just as glamorous.

The 90s were unusual in that it seemed to be an era that

fashion forgot. There was no distinct look of the 90s that stands out – but

perhaps this was the break designers needed to gather their thoughts before

unleashing their new creations on us in the 00s.

The past decade and the future

The new millennium saw a swing towards retro. Flares were

back, as was the maxi dress. Recycled old looks were dragged into the modern

era and given a contemporary twist.

It has been a long and exciting journey for ladies clothing

over the past 100 years. Fashion has changed with the times. It has produced

some timeless designs that will always radiate style and elegance and some

creations that we would all rather forget.

But then, that’s the point – fashion is who we are at any

one time in out lives.

We might look back on photos and ask ourselves what we were

thinking. But it wasn’t just us at the time – it was everyone. That’s the power

of fashion. Who knows where it will go next?
